Recep Tayyip Erdogan has strongly criticized Benjamin Netanyahu over the ongoing destruction and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, warning that the Israeli leader could soon face growing pressure from Muslims around the world.

Speaking during Eid al-Adha celebrations in his hometown of Rize, Erdogan called for greater unity among Muslim nations and urged stronger international action against Israel’s military operations in Gaza. According to remarks reported by Anadolu Agency, the Turkish president said the suffering in Gaza had given Muslims a special responsibility during the religious holiday.

Erdogan accused Netanyahu of continuing policies that have caused large-scale destruction in the Palestinian enclave and said the Israeli prime minister would eventually “learn the lesson he deserves” from the Muslim world. His comments reflected Ankara’s increasingly confrontational stance toward Israel since the Gaza conflict intensified in 2023.

The Turkish president’s remarks came shortly after Israeli authorities intercepted a Gaza-bound flotilla that had departed from Türkiye carrying humanitarian aid and pro-Palestinian activists. Israeli forces reportedly detained hundreds of activists involved in the mission, which aimed to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

Erdogan condemned the operation, describing the interception as an act of “piracy and banditry.” Ankara has repeatedly supported humanitarian assistance efforts for Palestinians and has continued diplomatic campaigns calling for a ceasefire and increased international pressure on Israel.

Since the start of the Gaza war, Erdogan has emerged as one of Israel’s harshest international critics. He has repeatedly accused the Israeli government of committing “genocide” and “state terrorism” against Palestinians. On several occasions, he has also compared Israeli policies to actions carried out by Nazi Germany, remarks that have drawn strong reactions from Israeli officials.

Tensions between Israel and Türkiye have continued to rise over the past two years. In July 2024, Erdogan suggested that Türkiye could take action against Israel similar to its previous involvement in conflicts in Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh. Israeli politicians and media interpreted the statement as a possible warning of military intervention.

Israeli leaders have increasingly portrayed Türkiye as a growing regional rival. Following Erdogan’s earlier comments, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz compared the Turkish president to former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and warned him about the consequences of regional confrontation.

Earlier this year, former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Türkiye could eventually become Israel’s main strategic challenger in the region, describing it as the “next Iran.”
